Praying For Spiritual Wisdom Helps Us Know God’s Will

Prayer shows what we care about. When Paul heard good news about the Colossians, he prayed for them. He did not pray one time and stop. Colossians 1:9 says, “We have not ceased to pray for you.”

Paul asked God to fill them “with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding” (Colossians 1:9). That is a big prayer. Yet we can say it in a simple way. Paul prayed, “Lord, help them know what You want. Help them think Your way. Help them live Your way.”

Many people want to know God’s will. They ask, “What should I do?” They ask, “Where should I go?” They ask, “How should I live?” God does not leave His people in the dark. He gives us His Word.

Finding Direction in God’s Word

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” A lamp helps us see the next step. God’s Word does that for us. It may not show every detail of the future. But it shows us how to walk today.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says all Scripture comes from God. Scripture teaches and corrects us, training us to do what is right. So if we want wisdom, we must open the Bible. If we want strength, we must listen to God. If we want truth, we must follow His Word.

The world gives many voices. Some voices sound smart. Other voices sound kind. Still, many voices lead people away from Jesus. That is why praying for spiritual wisdom matters so much.

Ephesians 6:12 says our fight does not come against flesh and blood. Our fight comes against dark powers. Satan lies. Blinding minds and twisting truth, he tries to make sin look good and God look bad.

God gives better wisdom. Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” To fear the Lord means honoring, trusting, and taking Him seriously as we place His voice above all others.

Praying For Spiritual Wisdom Helps Us Walk Well

Paul did not pray for knowledge only. He prayed for a changed life. Colossians 1:10 says we should “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord.” That means we should live in a way that honors Jesus.

A worthy walk does not save us. Jesus saves us by grace. Ephesians 2:8-9 says we receive salvation by grace through faith, not by works. Yet Ephesians 2:10 says God made us for good works. So good works do not earn salvation. They show that Jesus has changed us.

Paul names several marks of this walk. First, he says believers should bear fruit in every good work (Colossians 1:10). Good fruit means good things grow from a heart that knows Jesus. Kind words can be fruit. Honest work can be fruit. Help for the poor can be fruit. Forgiveness can be fruit.

Receiving Strength, Patience, and Joy

Next, Paul says believers should grow in the knowledge of God. We never outgrow our need to know Him more. A child can know God. A new Christian can know God. A Bible teacher of many years still needs to know God more.

Then Paul prays for strength. Colossians 1:11 says God strengthens His people “with all power.” This power comes from His great might. God does not ask us to stand alone. He gives strength for hard days.

Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear, for I am with you.” God also says, “I will strengthen you” and “I will help you.” That promise brings peace when life feels heavy.

Paul asks God to give steadfastness and patience with joy (Colossians 1:11). Steadfastness means we keep going. Patience means we do not quit when the wait feels long. Joy means we trust God even when life hurts.

Finding Refuge and Comfort in Him

Finally, Paul tells them to give thanks to the Father (Colossians 1:12). God has made His people fit to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. We did not make ourselves fit. God did that through Jesus.

That truth gives deep comfort. Though we may feel weak, face pain, or struggle to understand all that happens, God remains in control. But God knows. God sees. God stays near.

Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” A refuge gives safety. Strength gives power to stand. God gives both.

So we should pray like Paul. We can bring our church, family, and personal needs before God in prayer.

“Lord, fill us with Your wisdom. Help us know Your will. Teach us Your Word. Help us walk in a way that pleases Jesus. Make us strong. Grow good fruit in us. Give us patience, joy, and thanks.”

Praying for spiritual wisdom is not just for hard times. We need it every day. With God’s Word, God’s Spirit, and God’s strength, we can walk with Jesus in a dark world.
