The Global Gospel Message Tells the Truth

Good news can change a day. Great news can change a life. The gospel changes forever.

Paul told the Colossians that they had heard “the word of truth, the gospel” (Colossians 1:5). That means the gospel does not come from man’s ideas. It comes from God. It tells us what is true about God, sin, Jesus, the cross, and new life.

The word “gospel” means good news. Yet we must know the bad news first. God made us. He is holy. We have sinned against Him. Sin breaks our bond with God. We cannot fix that by good works. We cannot save ourselves.

Then the good news comes. Jesus, the Son of God, came to save sinners. He lived with no sin, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again on the third day. Consequently, all who turn from sin and trust Him receive grace, mercy, and life.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says Christ died for our sins, He was buried, and He rose again. That stands at the heart of the gospel. Romans 1:16 says the gospel is “the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.” God works through this message.

Religion alone cannot change the heart. Rules can tell us what to do. Traditions can shape our habits. Good advice can guide us for a while. But only Jesus can make us new.

The Colossian church needed that truth. False teachers tried to pull them away from Christ. They may have talked about secret wisdom, added rules, or made Jesus seem small. Because of these influences, Paul brought them back to the global gospel message.

The Global Gospel Message Grows Fruit

Colossians 1:6 says the gospel had come to them, just as it had gone into “all the world.” Paul says it kept “bearing fruit and increasing.” That means the gospel grows. It changes lives. It spreads from person to person.

Fruit means God makes real change in people. A proud person starts to grow humble. A bitter person learns to forgive. A lost person comes to Jesus. A lonely person finds family in the church. A fearful person learns to trust God.

Jesus used fruit language too. In John 15:5, He said, “I am the vine, you are the branches.” He also said that the one who stays close to Him bears much fruit. No branch can grow fruit by itself. In the same way, no Christian can grow strong apart from Jesus.

How the Message Spreads

The gospel also increases. That means it moves out. In Acts 1:8, Jesus told His followers that they would be His witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the end of the earth. They started close to home. Then the message spread far away.

Epaphras helped bring the gospel to Colossae. Colossians 1:7 calls him a “faithful servant of Christ.” He heard the truth. He believed the truth. Then he shared the truth. Because of that, people in Colossae came to know Jesus.

That should encourage us. You do not need to be famous to serve God, nor do you need a large crowd. Instead, you can share Jesus with one friend, pray for one family member, or show love to one hurting person. God can use small acts in big ways.

The Gospel Still Transforms Lives Today

The global gospel message still works today. It changes people in homes, prisons, schools, hospitals, and churches. Furthermore, it reaches rich and poor people alike, as well as children and older adults across nations, languages, and cultures.

No human plan can do what the gospel does. A church may have music, events, and programs. Those can help. But they cannot save souls. The gospel of Jesus saves.

Paul also says Epaphras told him about their “love in the Spirit” (Colossians 1:8). That love came from the Holy Spirit. It did not come from human strength alone. God’s Spirit made them love God and His people.

So we should keep the gospel at the center. We should not trade it for noise, hide it to please the world, or add to it as if Jesus were not enough.

Christ is enough. His cross is enough, His grace is enough, and His word is true.

Because the gospel bears fruit, we can have hope. As the gospel grows, we can keep sharing. Since Jesus lives, the good news still changes lives.
