Godly Husband Self Check: Learning to Love Your Wife

A Godly Husband Self Check Begins with the Heart
Ephesians 5:28 says, “Husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies.” This verse gives men a simple test. A husband already knows how to care for himself. When hungry, he eats. When tired, he rests. Should danger come, he protects his body. God says, “Now care for your wife with that same kind of care.”
This truth can be hard to face. Many men notice their own needs very fast. They know when they feel stressed, just as they recognize when they want time alone or desire respect. Yet they may miss the needs of their wives. A wife may feel tired, lonely, afraid, or unseen. A husband may not notice because he focuses only on himself.
A godly husband self check asks clear questions. Do I listen well? Is my speech kind? Do I make my wife feel safe, pray for her, and protect her from harm? Am I truly caring about her walk with God? These questions help a man look past excuses.
Hebrews 4:12 says God’s Word judges the thoughts and plans of the heart. That means the Bible does more than correct outward acts. It also shows what lives inside us. A man may say the right words but still carry pride. He may do chores but still feel bitter. He may lead prayer but still refuse to say sorry. God sees it all.
A Godly Husband Self Check Leads to Care
Ephesians 5:29 says no one hates his own body, but he feeds it and cares for it. Paul says Christ does this for the church. Jesus does not treat His people like trash. Instead, He feeds them with truth, guards them with love, and stays near them with grace. Husbands must learn from Him.
Cherishing Your Wife as a Gift
To cherish means to hold someone dear. It means a husband sees his wife as a gift, not as a problem. Proverbs 18:22 says, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing.” A wife is not a tool, nor is she a servant or a prize to win and then forget. She is a person made in God’s image.
Care shows up in small ways. A husband can ask, “How are you really doing?” He can hold his tongue when he feels sharp, laugh with his wife rather than at her, offer help before being asked, and thank her for all she does. Small acts of love build trust over time.
Demonstrating True Strength Through Service
A godly husband self check also asks about strength. God gives strength so a man can serve, not so he can crush others. Jesus had all power, yet He washed feet in John 13. He did not need to prove He was strong. His service showed true strength. In the same way, a husband shows strength when he stays gentle under pressure.
Preparing for Marriage with a Servant’s Heart
Single men can learn here too. A man should not only ask God for a wife. He should ask God to make him ready to love a wife. Marriage does not fix selfishness. Often, marriage shows selfishness. A man who wants marriage should learn prayer, patience, work, service, and self-control now.
Listening, Forgiveness, and Personal Transformation
James 1:19 says believers should be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. This verse can change a marriage. Many fights grow because someone speaks too fast. A husband can slow downby choosing to listen first. In addition, he can ask questions or say, “Help me understand.”
No man does this perfectly. Every husband needs grace. First John 1:9 says God forgives us when we confess our sins. A husband can come to God and say, “Lord, I have failed. Change me.” That prayer honors God.
Looking at ourselves may feel painful, but it brings life. Pride says, “She needs to change.” Wisdom says, “Lord, start with me.” When a husband lets God shape his heart, his home can become a place of peace.
