Christlike Love in Marriage: A Husband’s Call

Christlike Love in Marriage Starts with Jesus
Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives, and do not be bitter toward them.” This verse may look short, but it carries great weight. God does not say, “Love your wife only when she is easy to love.” He does not say, “Love her only when she agrees with you.” Instead, God gives a clear command. Husbands must love their wives and not let bitterness rule their hearts.
Paul writes this command inside a larger thought. Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” That means marriage belongs to Jesus. A husband does not get to place his home outside the rule of Christ. His words, moods, choices, and actions must honor the Lord. Love at home becomes one way a man worships God.
Ephesians 5:25 gives even more light. It says, “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her.” This verse shows what love means. Jesus gave Himself for His people. He did not hold back. He did not wait for us to become perfect. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. That is real love.
Christlike Love in Marriage Gives More Than Feelings
Many people think love means warm feelings. Feelings matter, but they cannot carry a marriage by themselves. Some days feel sweet. Other days feel hard. A tired husband may not feel loving after a long day. A hurt wife may not feel close after a hard talk. Yet God still calls His people to love.
Christlike love in marriage means a husband chooses what is good for his wife. He serves her with devotion, actively listening and praying for her needs. Protecting her heart and speaking with care, he seeks peace whenever conflict arises. Love does not mean he lets sin grow. Love means he deals with hard things in a godly way.
Giving All Instead of 50/50
The world often says marriage should be 50/50. That may sound fair, but Jesus shows a better way. Christ did not give half of Himself. He gave all of Himself. Philippians 2:7-8 says Jesus humbled Himself and obeyed even to death on a cross. His love cost Him much. A husband who follows Jesus must learn that love often costs him too.
That cost may look small at times. He may wash dishes when he feels tired, or stop and listen even when he wants to watch a game. When pride tempts him to hide, he chooses to say, “I was wrong,” extending forgiveness even when anger wants to stay. These acts may seem simple, but they show the heart of Jesus.
Rooting Out Bitterness and Walking in the Spirit
Christlike love in marriage also fights bitterness. Colossians 3:19 joins love and bitterness for a reason. A husband can do kind things and still hold anger inside. He can provide for the home and still speak with cold words. He can say, “I love you,” but treat his wife like a burden. God sees the heart. He calls men to deal with hidden anger.
A husband cannot love like Jesus by his own power. He needs the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22 says the fruit of the Spirit starts with love. God grows this love in a man as he walks with Christ. Prayer matters. Bible reading matters. Repentance matters. Time with God changes the heart.
Marriage points to a greater love. Revelation 19:7 speaks of the marriage of the Lamb. Jesus is the Bridegroom. The church is His bride. Every Christian marriage should point people to that great truth. When a husband loves his wife with grace, he gives the world a small picture of Jesus.
So the call is clear. A husband must not ask, “What can I get from her?” He should ask, “How can I show Jesus to her?” That question can change a home.
