Serve Jesus in Marriage: How Colossians 3 Changes the Home

Serve Jesus in Marriage with Your Words
Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” That verse sets the tone for the home.
Paul does not only speak about church life; he addresses our home life as well. In this passage, he guides wives, husbands, children, and fathers alike. Through these instructions, we see that Jesus deeply cares about the entire household.
Words matter in marriage. A soft word can help. A hard word can hurt. Proverbs 15:1 says, “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
That verse gives great help. A gentle answer can stop a fight from growing. A harsh word can make a small fire become big.
A wife may feel hurt by her husband. A husband may feel disrespected by his wife. Both may want to win the fight. But Jesus calls His people to love more than they love winning.
To serve Jesus in marriage means we ask, “Lord, what would please You right now?” That question can slow anger down. It can help a wife speak with care. It can help a husband listen with love.
This does not mean a wife never speaks truth. She should speak truth. Yet she can speak truth with grace. Ephesians 4:15 says we should speak the truth in love.
Choosing Love First
Some wives may say, “I will respect him when he loves me.” Some husbands may say, “I will love her when she respects me.” That can turn into a circle that never ends.
Jesus shows a better way. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. He did not wait for us to be good first. He loved first.
That truth changes marriage. A wife can honor Jesus even when her husband has much to learn. A husband can love like Jesus even when his wife has hard days.
God does not ignore sin. He sees it and corrects it. He lovingly calls each person to obey Him.
Serve Jesus in Marriage with Your Actions
Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” This verse helps us understand marriage.
A wife does not only serve her husband. She serves Jesus. A husband does not only serve his wife. He serves Jesus too.
This gives deep meaning to simple acts. Washing dishes can honor Jesus. Paying bills can honor Jesus. Saying “I am sorry” can honor Jesus. Holding your tongue can honor Jesus.
Many people want a happy home. But a happy home needs humble hearts. Pride breaks trust. Humility builds it.
Philippians 2:3 says, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit.” Then it says we should value others above ourselves. Jesus lived this way. He came to serve. He gave His life for sinners.
Instructions for Husbands and Wives
A husband must learn from Jesus. Colossians 3:19 says, “Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.” God does not allow a husband to be cruel. He calls him to love with care.
Ephesians 5:25 says husbands must love their wives as Christ loved the church. That is a very high call. Jesus gave Himself for His bride. A husband must give himself for his wife.
A wife must also learn from Jesus. 1 Peter 3:1-2 says a wife can win over a husband by her good life and respect. Peter speaks about husbands who do not obey the word. He says a wife’s life can preach without many words.
This does not mean she must stay silent about all pain. It means her godly life has power. Her faith can shine. Her peace can point to Jesus.
If danger exists, she should get help. God loves truth, protects the weak, and never blesses abuse.
Looking to Jesus Daily
In many homes, though, the battle comes in daily choices. Will I speak kindly, choose to forgive, and commit to prayer—even serving Jesus when I feel tired?
Jesus sees all of it. Hebrews 6:10 says God will not forget your work and love. That gives hope.
Your spouse may miss your quiet acts of love. Your children may not see your silent prayers. Friends may not know what you carry.
But Jesus knows, seeing your effort, caring for your heart, and rewarding your faithfulness.
A strong marriage grows when both people stop keeping score. They look to Jesus. They obey Him first.
That kind of home shows the gospel. It tells the world that Jesus changes hearts.
