God’s Plan for Wives: What Colossians 3 Teaches

God’s Plan for Wives Starts in Genesis
God made marriage. People did not make it up. Culture did not make it up. God made it from the start.
In Genesis 2, God made Adam first and placed him in the garden. Adam had work to do, caring for the garden and naming the animals. Yet God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18).
That verse matters. God saw that Adam needed someone, so He made Eve. Rather than creating her as a pet or a slave, He made her as a helper who fit him.
The word “helper” does not mean weak. In the Bible, God also calls Himself a helper. Psalm 121:2 says, “My help comes from the Lord.” So Eve had great value. She gave help, strength, and care.
God made Eve from Adam’s side. He did not take a bone from Adam’s head. That means Eve did not rule over Adam. He did not take a bone from Adam’s foot. That means Adam did not step on Eve. God took a rib from Adam’s side. That shows love, care, and closeness.
Then God said a man must leave his father and mother. He must join to his wife (Genesis 2:24). Marriage makes a new home. A husband and wife become one.
God’s plan for wives begins with this good design. A wife has honor, worth, and wisdom. Above all, she has a distinct role given directly by God.
God’s Plan for Wives Includes Trust
Colossians 3:18 says, “Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.” Many people do not like that word “submit.” Some hear it and think it means “be less.” Others think it means “have no voice.” That is not what God means.
To submit means to follow God’s order. It means a wife chooses to honor her husband’s lead. She does this because she trusts God.
A wife does not submit because her husband always gets it right. No husband always gets it right. A wife does not submit because her husband has more worth. He does not. Men and women both have great worth before God.
Equal Worth, Unique Roles
Galatians 3:28 says men and women are one in Christ. Because of this, both need Jesus, can know God, and can serve Him. Both matter deeply to God.
Yet God gives different roles in marriage. A husband must lead with love. A wife must help with trust. These roles do not fight each other. They work together when both people obey God.
Boundaries and Obeying God First
Still, submission has limits. A wife must not follow her husband into sin. Acts 5:29 says, “We must obey God rather than human beings.” If a husband asks his wife to lie, steal, hide evil, or sin, she must obey God first.
Also, abuse is not God’s plan. A wife should seek help if she faces harm. She should talk to a pastor, trusted leader, counselor, or the right legal help. God does not call a wife to stay in danger and stay silent.
Choosing Peace Over Conflict
In normal daily life, though, many fights start over small things. Dirty clothes. Harsh words. Money stress. Long work days. Hurt feelings. Over time, small hurts can fill the heart.
Then anger can spill out. One person says a sharp word. The other says one back. Soon both feel hurt and alone.
Colossians 3 calls a wife to a higher way. God tells her to honor her husband “as is fitting in the Lord.” That means she looks to Jesus first.
This is hard. It takes prayer, faith and a soft heart.
But God sees every act of love. He sees every gentle word. He sees every time a wife chooses peace over pride.
Marriage gets stronger when both people ask, “How can I honor God today?” That one question can change a home.
