Psalm 1 Happiness: Walk Away from Sin and Walk with God
Happiness Starts with the Right Path
Psalm 1 begins with a big word: “Blessed.” This word means happy, full, and well in the soul. Many people want this kind of life. We chase joy in jobs, homes, trips, money, and people. But God tells us where true joy starts.
Psalm 1:1 says, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked.” God starts by telling us where not to walk. He says the happy person does not follow bad advice. First, sin may look small. Then, it can pull us closer. Last, it can make us feel at home where we should not stay.
The verse gives three steps. First, we must not walk with the wicked. Second, we must not stand with sinners. Finally, we must not sit with scoffers. These words show a slow fall. A person first walks near sin. Next, he stops and stays with it. After that, he sits down and feels safe with it.
God loves people, and He sends us to love them too. Yet He does not want sin to guide us. Jesus ate with sinners, but He did not copy their sin. He loved them and called them to turn to God. In the same way, we can be kind to all people. Still, we must not let bad words, bad ways, or bad hearts lead us.
Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise.” Bad friends can pull us down. Good friends can help us grow. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Bad company corrupts good morals.” That means bad company can hurt a good heart.
Psalm 1 happiness begins when we ask hard questions. Who gives me advice? What do I watch? Where do I go for truth? Which voices shape my heart? These questions matter because our steps shape our lives.
Psalm 1 Happiness Grows in God’s Word
Psalm 1:2 says the blessed person finds joy “in the law of the LORD.” The law of the Lord means God’s Word. It shows us who God is, and it teaches us right from wrong. It gives hope when life feels hard.
This verse says the happy person thinks about God’s Word “day and night.” That does not mean we read the Bible every second. It means we carry God’s truth with us. We read it, think about it, pray over it, and use it in real life. God’s Word becomes our guide.
Joshua 1:8 says we should think about God’s Word day and night. Then we can obey it. God did not tell Joshua to just hear the Word. He told him to do what it says. Real joy grows when we hear God and follow Him.
Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world.” That means we should not let the world press us into its shape. Instead, God changes our minds by His truth. When God changes our minds, He also changes our steps.
Some people say, “I am a Christian, but I do not feel happy.” Life can still hurt. Bills can grow. Friends can fail. Family can be hard. Health can change. Yet Psalm 1 shows a joy that sits deeper than pain.
This joy does not come from perfect days. It comes from walking with God. When we delight in His Word, we learn His heart. As we learn His heart, we trust Him more. Then our souls grow strong.
Job 23:12 says, “I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.” Job loved God’s Word more than bread. That shows deep faith. Food feeds the body, but God’s Word feeds the soul.
Psalm 1 happiness is not cheap joy. It does not come from doing whatever we want. It grows when we walk away from sin and walk toward God. The happy person says no to bad counsel and yes to God’s truth. In that path, the soul finds real life.
