Godly Examples Help Us Follow Jesus

Paul says, “Brethren, join in following my example” (Philippians 3:17). That is a bold thing to say. Paul does not claim to be sinless. He already said he had not reached full perfection. Yet he can still say, “Follow my example,” because his life points to Jesus.

Every person follows someone. Children copy parents. Friends copy friends. Students copy teachers. People also copy famous voices online. What we watch and admire often shapes how we live.

That is why Paul tells believers to watch good people. He says to “observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us” (Philippians 3:17). In simple words, look at people who love Jesus and live for Him.

Godly examples matter because faith grows in real life. We need to see how a Christian speaks, how a Christian forgives, and how a Christian handles pain, money, work, family, and temptation.

Proverbs 13:20 says, “He who walks with wise men will be wise.” That verse teaches a clear truth. Wise friends help us grow wise. Foolish friends pull us toward harm.

Paul also says, “Bad company corrupts good morals” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Bad examples can lead us away from God. Good examples can help us stay near Him.

Godly examples do not replace Jesus. They point us to Jesus. Paul says in another place, “Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1). We follow people only as they follow the Lord.

Godly Examples Protect Us From Fake Faith

Paul gives a sad warning in Philippians chapter 3 verse 18. He speaks about people who live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Paul does not say this to meanly pick on them. He does not laugh at them or act mean. He does not feel happy when they make bad choices. Instead, Paul cries tears as he writes this down. His tears show us that he really cares about people. He knows that fake faith brings big trouble. Fake faith tricks people and hurts their lives.

These people may look very religious on the outside. They may know all the right church words, and they may go to church every week. They may even tell everyone that they love God. But the way they live every day shows something very different. Paul says that their end is destruction.

Paul also says that their god is their appetite. This means they only care about what they want right now. They let their own desires rule over them. They do not want to obey what God says in the Bible. Instead, they use religion as a fake mask to do whatever feels good to them.

Next, Paul says they brag about things that should make them feel sorry. They are not sad when they sin. Instead, they act like sin is a good thing to celebrate. Their minds are stuck on earthly things. They care a lot about getting praise from other people. They love money, power, fun, and comfort much more than they love Jesus.

It is very dangerous to copy people like this. If you follow bad examples, you will start to think that sin is okay. Your heart will get hard, and you will forget how to follow Jesus. That is why we must choose good, godly friends and teachers to look up to.

Genuine Faith Repents and Seeks the Truth

Paul’s sad warning is not talking about true believers who mess up. Real Christians still make mistakes every single day. They struggle with sin and try their best to do what is right. But when a true Christian sins, they feel very sad inside. They do not run away from God or brag about bad choices. Their hearts stay soft, and they want to make things right with God. God is very kind, loving, and patient with anyone who comes to Him with a humble heart.

The Bible gives us good stories about real people who made big mistakes. King David sinned in terrible ways. But when he realized his sin, he did not make excuses. He prayed to God and asked for a clean heart. God heard his prayer and forgave him. Peter denied that he knew Jesus three whole times because he was afraid. Peter felt so sad that he cried bitterly. Later on, Jesus spoke to Peter and forgave him. Jesus even gave Peter an important job to help lead the church. These stories show us that God still loves us and helps us when we turn back to Him.

The real danger comes when someone says they follow Jesus, but they refuse to stop sinning. Jesus wants all sinners to come to Him. But Jesus also commands us to repent. Repentance is a word that means agreeing with God about your sin. It means saying, “Lord, I was wrong, and I want to change.” It means turning around and walking in God’s way instead of your own way.

The Bible tells us to test every voice using God’s Word. Ask yourself simple questions about the people you listen to. Is this pastor teaching people to turn away from sin? Does this friend help me love Jesus more? Choose your friends and leaders very carefully. Follow people who truly love the truth and try to live like Jesus every day.
