The Highest Name: Why Jesus Stands Above Every Other Name
The Highest Name and Who God Is
In Philippians 2:9 the Bible says God gave Jesus “the name which is above every name.” That means His name is higher than any other name. Kings, rulers, and famous people all have names that many know. Still, God lifted up Jesus and gave Him the highest name. No one else stands with Him at that level.
In the Bible, a name is not just a word people call you. A name shows who you are on the inside. In Genesis 1:1 we read, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” The word “God” there is “Elohim.” It points to His great power as the Maker of all things. Later, in Exodus 3:14, God tells Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” His name shows that He has no beginning and no end. He always is.
Because a name shows who a person really is, the highest name must show that Jesus is more than just a good man. He is the Son of God. He is also God Himself. He came down to us and took the form of a servant (Philippians 2:7). After He died and rose again, God put Him in the highest place and gave Him the greatest name.
The Highest Name and the Trinity
The Bible teaches that there is one God. The same Bible also shows that this one God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Our minds have a hard time with this truth. Still, God tells us this about Himself, so we believe it.
In Genesis 1:26 God says, “Let Us make man in Our image.” He does not say “Let me make.” He says “Us” and “Our.” Deuteronomy 6:4 says, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD (YHWH) is our God (Elohim), the LORD is one.” God is one, yet the Hebrew word “Elohim” is plural. That points to more than one Person in the one true God.
The Old Testament also points to a Son who is God. Isaiah 7:14 says a virgin will have a son, and His name will be Immanuel, which means “God with us.” Isaiah 9:6 says this child will be called Mighty God and Eternal Father. Isaiah 43:11 says, “I, even I, am the LORD, and there is no savior besides Me.” Only God can save.
In the New Testament, Jesus uses the same kind of words that God used in the Old Testament. In Revelation 1:17–18, He says, “I am the first and the last… I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore.” Isaiah 44:6 says the LORD is “the first and the last.” So we see that Jesus shares the same titles as God. Colossians 1:16–17 says that all things were made by Jesus and for Jesus, and that in Him all things hold together. Only God can do that.
Because of this, we see why God gave Jesus the highest name. He is fully man and fully God. The Father lifts Him up for all to see and calls everyone to honor Him.
The Highest Name and Every Knee
Philippians 2:10–11 tells us what will happen one day: “at the name of Jesus every knee will bow… and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” This sounds like Isaiah 45:23, where the LORD says, “To Me every knee will bow, every tongue will swear allegiance.” In the New Testament, this now points to Jesus.
Every person and every angel will bow. Some will bow with joy because they trusted Him in this life. Others will bow with fear because they refused Him. Hebrews 9:27 says, “it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment.” No one can run from that day. On that day, all will say that Jesus Christ is Lord.
For those who follow Jesus now, this truth changes how we live. We do not wait for that final day to honor Him. We honor Him now. We bend our knees now. We choose His way over our way now.
When we know that God gave Him the highest name, we find courage. People may laugh at the name of Jesus. They may attack us when we stand for Him. Heaven does not laugh. Heaven bows. Because we know this, we keep loving, speaking truth, and serving. We know our work for Jesus will never be useless (1 Corinthians 15:58). His name stands above all.
