Treasure in Heaven: Why Faithful Marriage Matters to God

Treasure in Heaven Comes from Faithful Love

Jesus talked about treasure. In Matthew 6:19-20, He said not to store up treasure on earth. Then He said to store up treasure in heaven.

Earthly treasure does not last. Money can go away. Health can fail. Beauty can fade. Praise from people can stop.

Heavenly treasure lasts forever. God sees what others miss. He remembers what others forget.

Colossians 3:24 says, “You will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward.” Then Paul says, “It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

That means daily life matters. Marriage matters. Small acts of love matter.

A wife may answer with kindness when she wants to snap back. God sees that. A husband may help when he feels worn out. God sees that too.

One spouse may forgive again. Another may pray through tears. A couple may choose to seek help instead of giving up. God sees each step.

Treasure in heaven does not mean we earn our way to God. We do not. Ephesians 2:8-9 says God saves us by grace through faith. Salvation is a gift.

Yet God still rewards His children. He loves faith. He blesses obedience. Hebrews 11:6 says God rewards those who seek Him.

This truth gives hope to tired hearts. Some days in marriage feel hard. Some seasons feel long. But no act of faith goes to waste.

Jesus also said His people must take up the cross and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). That means we must die to selfish ways. Marriage gives many chances to do that.

Pride wants the last word. Love chooses a gentle word. Anger wants to punish. Grace chooses to forgive.

Selfishness asks, “What do I get?” Faith asks, “How can I honor Jesus?”

Treasure in Heaven Grows in the Home

God uses marriage to shape us. He uses it to show us our sin. He also uses it to teach us love.

Ephesians 5:31-32 says marriage points to Christ and the church. That is a big truth. A husband’s love should show the love of Jesus. A wife’s trust should show the church’s love for Christ.

This does not mean every marriage looks perfect. No marriage does. Two sinners live in one home. They both need grace every day.

Because sin exists, homes face trouble. Harsh words can wound. Cold hearts can grow. Secret sin can hurt trust. Old pain can rise again.

Finding Grace and Strength in Times of Trouble

But Jesus can heal what sin has hurt. He can soften hard hearts. He can teach proud people to say, “I was wrong.”

Galatians 5:22-23 tells us about the fruit of the Spirit. The Spirit grows love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control in God’s people.

Those traits help any marriage. Patience helps when a spouse moves slow to change. Kindness helps when life feels heavy. Self-control helps when anger rises.

Wise couples ask for help. Proverbs 15:22 says plans fail without counsel. A pastor, counselor, or mature Christian couple can give help.

Getting help does not mean you failed. It can mean you want to grow. It can mean you love your marriage enough to fight for it.

Still, safety must come first when harm or abuse happens. A person in danger should seek help right away. God cares about truth and safety.

Practical Steps to Store Treasure in Heaven

For many couples, the path forward starts with small steps. Pray together. Read Scripture. Speak kindly. Say sorry fast. Forgive with care. Ask good questions. Listen well.

These small steps can store treasure in heaven. They may not look big. But God values them.

A gentle answer can be treasure. A hidden prayer can be treasure. A hard choice to forgive can be treasure.

One day, Jesus will make all things new. Revelation 21:4 says God will wipe away every tear. Pain will end. Sin will die. Joy will last.

Until that day, marriage gives us a place to worship God. A wife can honor Jesus in how she loves. A husband can honor Jesus in how he leads. Both can honor Jesus in how they serve.

The greatest treasure is Jesus Himself. A good marriage can bless a family. It can help children. It can strengthen a church.

Yet even the best marriage points past itself. It points to Christ, the perfect Bridegroom, who never fails His people.
