Hope of the Gospel: Jesus Makes Peace by His Cross

Colossians 1:19-23 shows why the cross matters so much. Paul says all the fullness was pleased to dwell in Jesus. This means Jesus is not a small Savior. He is fully God. Colossians 2:9 says all the fullness of God lives in Christ in bodily form.

That truth matters because only God can save us. A good teacher can give wise words. A kind friend can give comfort. A brave leader can help people. Yet only Jesus can bring sinners back to God.

Paul says Jesus came to reconcile all things to Himself. Reconcile means to make peace where peace had broken. Sin broke our peace with God. Far from merely making us feel bad, sin left us guilty before a holy God while filling our hearts with hostility toward Him.

Verse 21 says we were once alienated and hostile in mind. That means we were far from God. Our minds did not love His rule. Our deeds showed the problem in our hearts. This is why people need more than advice. We need rescue, forgiveness, and a transformed heart.

Hope of the Gospel Means Peace Comes Through Blood

Paul says Jesus made peace through the blood of His cross. That phrase may sound strong, but it stands at the center of the Christian faith. The cross shows both God’s justice and God’s love.

God’s justice means He must deal with sin. He cannot call evil good. He cannot ignore guilt. A judge who ignores evil does not show love. He fails the innocent. In the same way, God must judge sin because He is holy.

At the same time, God loves sinners. Romans 5:8 says Christ died for us while we were still sinners. God did not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He sent His Son when we were helpless.

Isaiah 53 helps us understand the cross. The prophet says the Servant was pierced for our sins and crushed for our wrongs. He also says we find peace through His wounds. Jesus fulfilled that promise. He carried our sin in His own body on the tree.

This is the hope of the gospel. Jesus did not die by accident. He gave His life for sinners. His blood paid the price. His death opened the way back to God.

Hope of the Gospel Means We Stand Before God Clean

Colossians 1:22 gives a wonderful result. Jesus reconciles believers so He can present them holy, blameless, and beyond reproach. These words should amaze us because we know our own hearts, our deepest failures, and the wrong things we have done.

Yet God sees every believer in Christ. Because Jesus paid the debt, no charge can stand. Romans 8:1 says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. That means God does not hold our sins against us.

Holy means set apart for God. Blameless means no stain remains before His court. Beyond reproach means no accusation can defeat what Jesus has done. Satan may accuse. Our own hearts may accuse. Other people may remember our past. Still, Christ’s blood speaks louder.

True Faith Endures in Christ

Paul then adds that believers must continue in the faith. He says they must stay firm and not move away from the hope of the gospel. This does not mean we earn salvation by staying strong. It means true faith keeps holding to Jesus.

Jesus said His sheep hear His voice and follow Him. He also said no one can snatch them from His hand in John 10:27-28. God keeps His people. Because He keeps them, they keep trusting Him.

A person may stumble and still belong to Christ. Peter denied Jesus, yet Jesus restored him. David sinned deeply, yet he cried out to God. Real faith may grow weak, but it does not make peace with unbelief. The Spirit draws God’s people back to Christ.

The Hope That Changes Everything

This truth gives us strong hope. Our confidence does not depend on our mood, our works, or our past. Instead, it rests entirely in Jesus, who died and rose again.

The resurrection proves that the cross worked. Jesus did not stay in the grave. He rose on the third day. Many saw Him alive. His followers touched Him, ate with Him, and heard Him teach. Then He went back to the Father and sent the Holy Spirit.

Now the church carries this message to the world. People still need peace with God. Many feel shame. Others feel proud. Some feel lost. Still, the answer stays the same. Jesus saves sinners.

That is the hope of the gospel. God came near in Christ. Jesus died for sin. He rose from the dead. He brings His people home. No other hope can do that.
