To Live Is Christ: A Simple Choice That Changes Everything

What Does It Mean To Live Is Christ?

Paul sat in a jail. He did not know if he would live or die. From that hard place, he wrote these words: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain” (Philippians 1:21). These words are very strong. They show what he cared about most.

Paul knew that he might die soon. He also knew that he might live longer. If he lived, he would keep telling people about Jesus. If he died, he would go to be with Jesus in heaven. He said that both things were good. He just wanted Jesus to be honored in his life or in his death (Philippians 1:20).

Many people have goals. They want more money. They want to be healthy. They want to feel happy. These things are not bad. But Paul had a much bigger goal. He wanted Jesus more than anything else. That is what to live is Christ means. It means that Jesus comes first.

A New Main Goal: To Live Is Christ

Before Paul knew Jesus, he had other goals. He wanted power and fame in the religious world. He worked very hard for that (Philippians 3:4–6). Then he met Jesus one day on the road to Damascus. That day changed his life. He now saw that all his old goals were not as good as knowing Christ (Philippians 3:7–8).

From then on, Paul said, to live is Christ. Jesus became his new center. Jesus gave him his new job. Jesus gave him his new way to live. Jesus gave him his new joy. Jesus gave him his new hope.

We can have that same kind of change. We can still work. We can still care for our family. We can still plan for the future. But now all these things sit under Jesus. We go to work in a way that shows Jesus. We live at home in a way that shows Jesus. We spend money in a way that shows Jesus. Our main goal becomes to live is Christ.

To Live Is Christ In Our World Today

Today, many people say, “Do what you want. Do what feels good. Follow your heart.” That message turns us toward ourselves. It does not turn us toward God. When we only follow our own hearts, we often feel empty. Things never feel like enough.

Paul chose a better way. He did not live just for himself. He lived for Jesus. This made his life strong when things got hard. Even in jail, he still had joy. Even in pain, he still had hope. He knew that Jesus loved him. He knew that nothing could take Jesus away.

We can live this way too. Colossians 3:17 says, “Whatever you do… do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” That covers everything. School, work, sports, chores, rest, and fun. We ask, “How can I show Christ here?” When we do that, we live out to live is Christ.

Why “To Die Is Gain” Helps Us Live Now

Paul also said, “to die is gain.” He did not want to harm himself. He did not hate life. He just knew that death brings believers face to face with Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:8). That is the best thing of all. That is why death is gain for a Christian.

This truth made Paul brave. If he lived, he would serve Jesus. If he died, he would be with Jesus. Either way, he would be okay. Nothing could really beat him.

We can rest in this truth. We do not have to fear the future. We do not have to fear death. Jesus rose from the dead. He now holds our life. We can say with Paul, “For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” When we really believe this, we can live each day with peace and trust.
