Living Right: How to Think and Act God’s Way

Living Right in Starts in the Mind

Paul gives us a clear word in Philippians 4:8. He says, “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely… dwell on these things.” That means we must think about things that please God.

Our thoughts matter. They shape our words while guiding our daily choices. Ultimately, these inner thoughts reveal what we love most.

Jesus said the heart sends out our actions. In Matthew 15:19, He says evil thoughts, murder, lies, and other sins come from the heart. So, if we want to live right, we must ask God to help us think right.

Many people today say, “Do what feels right.” God says, “Do what I say is right.” That matters because our feelings can change fast. One day we may feel kind. Another day we may feel mad. Yet God’s Word stays the same.

Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” A lamp helps us see where to walk. In the same way, the Bible helps us see how to live.

Focusing Your Mind on What Pleases God

Living right in Philippians 4 means we do not let the world train our minds. Instead, we let God’s Word teach us. We ask, “Does this thought honor God?” We also ask, “Will this choice help me obey Jesus?”

Paul gives us a list to use. First, he says to think about what is true. Lies do not come from God. Next, he says to think about what is honorable. That means we should think about good and noble things.

Then Paul says to think about what is right. God alone tells us what right means. After that, he says to think about what is pure. Pure thoughts help us stay away from sin.

Also, Paul says to think about what is lovely. Lovely thoughts help us speak with grace. Last, he says to think about what brings praise. Praise lifts our eyes back to God.

Living Right Leads to Daily Obedience

Paul does not stop with thoughts. In Philippians 4:9, he says, “Practice these things.” That means we must do what we learn.

James 1:22 says, “Prove yourselves doers of the word.” God does not want us to only hear Bible truth. He wants us to obey it.

A child may hear a parent say, “Do not touch the hot stove.” Hearing that rule helps. Still, the child must obey it to stay safe. God’s commands work like that. He gives them because He loves us.

Living as an Example for Others

Living right in Philippians 4 also means we choose truth when others lie. We choose truth when others lie and pursue purity when others sin. Rather than acting cruel, we extend kindness, standing firm in God’s way even if people laugh.

Paul told the church, “Follow what you saw in me.” That is a strong statement. He did not say, “Only listen to my words.” He said, “Watch my life.”

Could we honestly say that? Imagine telling someone, “Follow how I talk.” Are we confident enough to invite others to mirror how we treat our family or steward our time?

Those questions help us grow. They do not need to make us feel hopeless. Instead, they should lead us to Jesus.

Jesus forgives sin. He changes hearts. He helps weak people grow strong.

Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before men.” Our good works should point people to God. When we live right, we show the world that Jesus changes lives.

Still, we must remember one key truth. We do not earn God’s love by living right. Jesus saves us by grace through faith. Ephesians 2:8-9 teaches that truth.

After God saves us, He teaches us to walk in His way. Good works become fruit. They show that new life has begun.

So, start with your mind. Fill it with God’s Word. Pray when wrong thoughts come. Ask the Holy Spirit for help.

Then take the next right step. Tell the truth. Say no to sin. Love your neighbor. Forgive someone. Honor God with your body.

God’s peace comes with this kind of life. Philippians 4:9 says, “The God of peace will be with you.” That promise gives hope. We do not walk alone. God walks with us.
