Put on Love: The Perfect Bond of Unity

Put on Love Above All Things
Colossians 3:14 says, “Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.” Paul has already told believers to clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and forgiveness. Then he explains that love goes over them all.
Think of love like a coat. A coat covers the whole outfit. In the same way, love covers every Christian virtue. Without love, good actions can become cold. With love, even small acts can shine.
Choosing love is an intentional act. Love does not always feel easy. Some people hurt us. Others annoy us. A few may drain us. Even then, God calls us to love like Jesus.
1 John 4:19 says, “We love, because He first loved us.” That verse keeps us humble. We do not create Christian love on our own. God gives it first. Then we share it with others.
Paul calls love “the perfect bond of unity.” A bond holds things together. Love holds a church together. Programs do not do that by themselves. Music does not do that by itself. A nice building does not do that by itself.
Truth matters. Doctrine matters. The Bible matters. Yet God wants truth to walk with love. Ephesians 4:15 tells us to speak “the truth in love.” Truth without love can sound harsh. Love without truth can become weak. God gives us both.
Jesus said love would mark His people. John 13:35 says, “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” The world watches how Christians treat each other. Our love should point people to Jesus.
Loving God and Loving People
A teacher once asked Jesus which command was greatest. Jesus answered in Matthew 22:37, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” Then He gave the second command. Matthew 22:39 says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus gave a simple summary of the whole law. Love God. Love people. That sounds simple, but it reaches every part of life.
When we love God, we worship Him only. No idols are placed before Him. In addition, we honor His name and set aside time to rest and remember Him.
When we love people, we honor parents and refrain from murder. Staying pure in marriage comes naturally, as does refusing to steal. Furthermore, we do not lie or covet what others have.
The Ten Commandments show us what love looks like. God does not give commands to steal joy. He gives commands to guard love.
Let the Peace of Christ Rule
Colossians 3:15 then says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts.” The word “rule” means to lead or guide. Christ’s peace should make the call in our hearts.
Anger may want to take charge. Pride may want to speak first. Fear may try to lead the day. Still, Jesus calls His peace to rule.
Philippians 4:7 says the peace of God will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. This peace does not mean life has no trouble. It means Jesus stays with us in the trouble.
Cultivate Gratitude and Daily Action
Paul also says, “Be thankful.” Gratitude helps love grow. A thankful heart does not demand as much. Instead, it remembers grace, notices gifts, and extends mercy.
A thankful spouse can speak with more care, while a thankful parent corrects with greater patience. Likewise, a thankful church member serves with deeper joy. Gratitude helps us love well.
Living out this calling means we seek what helps others. Love does not mean we approve sin—Jesus never did that—but it does mean speaking truth with care. Beyond that, it involves forgiving, serving, and praying for people even when they are difficult.
Romans 5:8 says God showed His love by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. That is the greatest love. Jesus did not wait for us to become clean. He came to save us.
Because Christ loved us first, we can love others now, while His peace rules our hearts and His Spirit guides our steps. So, each day, put on love and let others see Jesus through you.
