Nothing to Fear at the Empty Tomb

Two women walked toward a grave in deep sorrow. Their Lord had died in great pain and shame. They saw His blood. They heard His last cry. Now they brought spices to honor His body. Every step felt heavy. Every thought hurt. Hope seemed lost. Yet Matthew 28:5 holds a shock. The angel said, “Do not be afraid.” He stood by the open tomb and spoke calm into their storm.

Why the Angel Said There Was Nothing to Fear at the Empty Tomb

Very soon, they would learn there was nothing to fear at the empty tomb. The angel knew why they came. Verse 5 says, “I know that you are looking for Jesus who has been crucified.” He did not shame their grief. He met them in it. Then the angel gave the great news in verse 6: “He is not here, for He has risen, just as He said.” He called them to see the place where He lay. Faith has eyes. Faith sees the empty place and hears the sure word of God.

Luke gives more detail. Luke 24:5–6 records the angels saying, “Why do you seek the living One among the dead? He is not here, but He has risen.” That question cuts deep. People still seek life in dead places. They hope in fame, money, or sex. They lean on power or comfort. Each promise fails. Graves hold bodies. They do not hold hope. Only Christ steps out of the tomb alive and stands as Lord over death.

Even with this, the women still felt mixed. Matthew 28:8 says they left the tomb “with fear and great joy.” Grief turned, but not all at once. Heart and mind needed time to catch up with what eyes saw. God understood this blend of fear and joy. So Jesus met them on the way. Verse 9 says He greeted them. They fell down and held His feet and worshiped Him. Real, warm, and close, the risen Lord stood before them. No vision could give them that. They touched His feet. They heard His voice and knew it was Him.

How the Risen Lord Proves There Is Nothing to Fear at the Empty Tomb

Again Jesus said, “Do not be afraid” (Matthew 28:10). He repeated the same word the angel spoke. He also gave a task. Jesus told them to go and tell His brothers to meet Him in Galilee. Mission grew out of comfort. Peace came before purpose. He did not just remove fear. He filled them with joy and sent them out to share what they had seen.

Today many still stand in their own graveyard of shame and loss. People carry pain from sin, abuse, or bad choices. Death feels near. Guilt feels heavy. Yet the Bible says we now have nothing to fear at the empty tomb. First Corinthians 15:55 asks, “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” Sin gave death its sting. Law gave sin its power. Jesus broke both on the cross and in the grave. He took our sin upon Himself. Isaiah 53:5 says He was “crushed for our iniquities.” Because He rose, He proved the payment worked. God accepted the sacrifice, and death no longer holds the last word.

Romans 3:23 declares that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No one stands good enough on their own. Still, Romans 3:24 says we get “justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus.” Grace flows from the empty tomb. Guilt no longer rules those who trust in Jesus. Past shame cannot chain those who flee to the risen Lord. When He walked out of the tomb, He left our sin behind and opened the way to real life.

Jesus’ Victory Over Death

Graves often bring silence and tears. Yet the tomb of Jesus brings a call and a song. The call says, “Come see.” People should look into that empty place and think hard about what it means. The song says, “He is risen.” This good news goes out to all lands. For the believer, there stands nothing to fear at the empty tomb. Death lost. Hell failed. Christ won. In His victory, broken hearts now find rest and deep peace.
